inverseArts is a project which explores the experiential world of immersive artworks and the artists who create them. We offer reviews of contemporary works as well as discussion of historical precedents.

We are primarily interested in the medium of virtual reality, with its promise of perceptual translocation. We also consider related genres such as spatial audio, installation art, and panoramic painting.

The distinguishing characteristic of works capturing our interest is that they put the viewer at the center of the art experience, to be fully surrounded by the projected environment. These works are not bounded by picture frames, perched upon pedestals, nor set upon the stage; but instead are directly visited by the audience in the first person.
